Diwali Marketing 2026: What Last Year’s Festive Data Says About When Indians Actually Buy
Diwali falls on Sunday, 8 November 2026. If your festive plan peaks on that date, last year’s data suggests you may be aiming at the wrong week.

The short answer: festive demand in India arrives in waves, not as one spike. In AppsFlyer’s analysis of the 2025 season, shopping apps earned their biggest share of season revenue during Navratri week, and Diwali week ranked among the lowest. Yet surveys show a sizeable group still shops in the final days. Both are true, which is why one Diwali-week push is no longer a plan.
Key dates for Diwali 2026
Moment | Date |
Navratri begins | 11 October |
Dhanteras | Friday, 6 November |
Diwali (Lakshmi Puja) | Sunday, 8 November |
Bhai Dooj | Wednesday, 11 November |
Is Diwali week really the sales peak?
Not always. AppsFlyer’s India Festive Report 2026 tracked app behaviour across seven categories from 18 August to 27 October 2025. Each category ran on its own calendar:
Shopping: Navratri week alone captured 17% of season revenue on Android and 15% on iOS. Diwali week was among the lowest-revenue weeks.
Finance: the biggest week came after Diwali, which AppsFlyer links to Chhath Puja.
Travel: demand kept climbing into Diwali week as people booked trips home.
One limit matters here: this is mobile app data, not all retail. A jeweller, a sweet shop and a skincare brand will each see a different curve.
Shoppers research like analysts and buy like impulse shoppers
A Google-commissioned Ipsos study of Navratri and Diwali shoppers in 2025, reported by MediaInfoline, found two habits running side by side. Nine in ten shoppers researched extensively online, yet 70% made at least one spontaneous festive purchase. Creators also mattered: 73% of festive buyers looked to them for inspiration.
That helps explain the app data. Careful research happens early. Impulse buying, triggered by video, offers and fast delivery, happens late.
AI search is now part of the festive journey
MiQ’s Festive Shopper Insights 2026 surveyed 5,700+ shoppers. It found that 43% now discover brands through AI search, against 30% through e-commerce platforms and 27% through social media. InMobi’s festive report found that four in five shoppers want AI shopping assistants to guide their purchases.
Treat these as direction, not exact market share, because they are self-reported. The Google study also suggests AI adds a layer rather than replacing search: 94% of chatbot users also used Google Search. For brands, the practical move is clear product information, consistent prices and offers, and direct answers to gifting questions. Our guide to AEO strategies for the AI era covers how.
Speed and cost are the two pressure points
Delivery: 90% of shoppers in the Google-commissioned study treated delivery within two days as non-negotiable. A late promise loses the impulse buyer.
Media costs: MiQ estimates festive media rates can rise by as much as 42%, with video taking the largest share of festive spend and connected TV growing in double digits.
What to do in the next 20 days
This is our recommendation, not a research finding. Adjust it to your category.
Window | Priority |
Now to 1 November | Lock your hero products and offer. Publish gift guides and FAQs. Get creator content live. Warm up people who’ve already visited your site or engaged with you. |
2–6 November | Treat Dhanteras as its own moment if you sell gold, jewellery, gifts or home goods. Show delivery cut-off dates on every ad and product page. |
7–8 November | Push availability, fast delivery and one simple offer to last-minute buyers. |
From 9 November | Retarget buyers ahead of Bhai Dooj, ask for reviews, and keep the conversation going. |
Before you spend another rupee, check your own numbers. Compare Navratri week with Diwali week in last year’s Meta, Google and website data. If your sales peaked early, move budget earlier. If they didn’t, your category may follow the late pattern.
